Arch-Breaking Feeder

This feeder features a large-capacity hopper with two counter-rotating spindles fitted with material paddles to break bridging and avoid blockages. Most manufacturers only equip a single spindle, yet RICHI’s dual-shaft design delivers far superior anti-bridging performance.

Driven by a variable-frequency motor, it adjusts feeding speed in real time according to the mill’s running load, ensuring consistent, even raw material delivery into downstream processing sections.

Forced Feeder

Ground alfalfa features low bulk density and poor flowability, so gravity feeding alone cannot send materials into the ring die smoothly. To end this, installed at the front of the pelletizing chamber, it pushes raw materials horizontally into the pressing zone through spiral or paddle structures.

This exclusive forced feeding system could maintain steady continuous material supply between ring die and rollers. It also marks a critical structural difference separating alfalfa mills from standard animal feed pellet machines.

Ring Die & Roller Assembly

The ring die adopts 42CrMo alloy steel with carburizing treatment for outstanding wear resistance against coarse alfalfa fiber. Roller shells use 42CrMo or 40CrMnTi alloy steel with textured surfaces to strengthen material gripping force.

Operators could adjust gaps between rollers and die inner walls via eccentric shafts. The standard gap lets rollers spin intermittently as the die rotates; you can verify proper clearance by inserting a sheet of A4 paper for testing.

Alfalfa features high crude fiber content and low bulk density. Standard pellet mills often face jamming, sharp output drops or complete discharge failure when processing this forage. Our alfalfa pelletizer machine adopts 6–8 stage high-torque motors that deliver far stronger extrusion force than 4-stage motors.

Combined with custom arch-breaking and forced feeding systems, it pushes alfalfa powder into die holes continuously for stable forming. Smooth production remains guaranteed even for formulas containing over 80% pure alfalfa.

Dense Pellets

Alfalfa pellets with insufficient hardness create excessive fines during packaging, shipping and feeding, leading to valuable nutrition loss. The machines are equipped with 42CrMo alloy steel ring dies and an optimized compression ratio ranging from 1:8 to 1:15.

Alfalfa hay baler machine for forage feed raw material processing

Pretreatment

Baled or compacted bulk alfalfa must first be loosened via a bale breaker. For fresh alfalfa with excessive moisture, coarse crushing and pre-drying are required in advance. This pre-work eliminates processing jams and guarantees steady feeding for all downstream equipment.

Grinding

Preprocessed alfalfa is conveyed to a forage-specific hammer mill via belt conveyor. Its built-in forced feeder with stirring plates delivers material evenly into the grinding chamber. After cyclone separation and pulse dust removal, 6–8 mm uniform alfalfa meal is stored in buffer silos for later pelletizing.

Drying

Crushed alfalfa meal travels into a rotary drum dryer to cut moisture to roughly 15%. A variable frequency drive adjusts the dryer’s rotating speed flexibly. It adapts perfectly to alfalfa batches with varying initial water content, preventing soft pellets or die blockages during pelleting.

Pelletizing

Dried alfalfa meal flows into the mill’s top arch-breaking hopper, where dual shafts break bridging. Ring dies and rollers squeeze material through die holes at a 1:8–1:15 compression ratio. Meanwhile, an exhaust fan with air lock removes steam and fine dust released in the high-pressure pelletizing process.

Cooling

Hot pellets are lifted by a bucket elevator into a counter-flow cooler. Cool air drawn upward through the material bed dissipates extra heat and residual moisture, cooling pellets down to ambient temperature. Equipped with a high-temperature level sensors control material residence time inside the cooler.

Cooled pellets enter a vibrating sieve to separate fines and broken fragments from intact finished goods. The single-layer screen has two outlets for waste and qualified pellets separately. Standard pellets get auto-weighed and sealed. All screened defective scraps are recycled back to the pellet mill.

What practical gaps separate alfalfa pellet mills from regular livestock feed machines?

In our on-site tests, four core differences show up. First, we fit arch-breaking plus forced feeders — normal feed mills skip these two parts. Second, we install 6–8 pole high-torque motors, not the fast-spinning 4-pole types. Third, our ring dies use wear-resistant 42CrMo alloy steel (stainless steel for ordinary models). Yes, matching-size alfalfa units deliver lower output, yet they handle fluffy high-fiber forage without constant blockages.

Do I have to feed steam into the mill while making alfalfa pellets?

Steam is never mandatory, from what we’ve seen on local ruminant farms. A tiny steam dose softens tough plant fibers, lifting hourly output — but it forces you to buy extra boilers and a conditioner unit. Without steam, the machine still runs stably; throughput just drops a little. Think over your budget and target capacity, then pick whether to add the full steam conditioning set.

What raw material standards should I follow before alfalfa pelleting work?

For smooth daily production, grind stalks into 3–5 mm fine powder, and lock moisture between 12% and 15%. Got baled compact alfalfa? Break it loose with a bale breaker first. Overlong grass gets cut into 3–5 cm segments by a chaff cutter. Fresh wet forage? Dry it down to the target moisture range before sending it to the pellet mill.

Can this alfalfa mill produce full feed blends of grass and grain ingredients?

Absolutely — we’ve built dozens of lines making mixed ruminant pellets for global clients. Mix alfalfa meal with corn, soybean meal or other grains per your feed formula. A ribbon blender works best here; it balances materials with huge weight gaps. Do note alfalfa’s low bulk density (120–150 kg/m³) when you calculate the blender’s usable tank volume.

How frequently will I need to swap out the ring die of my alfalfa pellet mill?

Die service life shifts widely — based on forage type, grind fineness, daily runtime and total throughput. Our carburized 42CrMo alloy dies outlast cheap steel variants, yet fiber still wears die openings slowly. If pellets turn crumbly or dust spikes sharply (from worn die throats), repair the die first. Only replace it once abrasion hits the unrecoverable limit; we suggest monthly die inspections.

Any cost-effective simple line refusing full-automatic pellet plants?

We provide a split semi-automatic production solution divided into three independent modules: crushing, drying, and pelletizing with cooling and packaging. Material transportation relies on forklifts and manual work. This solution only requires a 6-meter workshop height and saves costs on steel structures and automatic components. However, its labor costs may be high and it may generate dust pollution.
