From raw biomass to finished animal bedding pellets, the process is more than just pressing material through a die. It requires a series of carefully designed processes and customized animal bedding machines – grinding, drying (where needed), pelletizing, cooling, and screening – each step engineered to maximize absorbency, minimize dust, and deliver a consistent and premium product your pets love.

Raw material pretreatment
Oversized material first goes through chipping or shredding. A hammer mill then reduces everything to a uniform 3–5mm powder. Magnetic separators remove tramp metal, protecting downstream equipment from damage.

Mixing
Proportions are measured and combined – wood with binders, straw with additives, or paper pulp with conditioning agents. The goal: a homogeneous feedstock that ensures consistent pellet quality batch after batch.

Pelleting
Conditioned material enters the ring-die pellet mill, where rotating rollers force it through die holes under high pressure. Friction heat (70–130°C) softens natural lignins, binding particles into dense, durable pellets.

Cooling
Freshly extruded pellets emerge hot – up to 80°C. They’re transferred to a counter-flow cooler. This gradually reduces temperature to room level (+3–5°C), hardening the pellets for handling.

Drying
Not always required – but critical when moisture exceeds 15–18%. A rotary or belt dryer brings moisture down to 8–12%, preventing mold during storage and ensuring pellets maintain their structural integrity over time.

Shifting&Packaging
Pellets pass through a vibrating or rotary screen. Oversize and fines are separated and recycled back to the mill. Only on-spec pellets reach the finished product bin, then move to the bagging scale for final packaging.

– How do I choose the right animal bedding pellet mill capacity?
Start with your target output. Different materials yield different throughput on the same machine. Wood gives you the highest output; straw and grass drop by 30–50%; paper sits somewhere in between. For a 520 model (ring die diameter 520mm), expect roughly 1.5–3 T/H for wood, 1–2 T/H for straw, and 1.5–2.5 T/H for paper. Also consider your feedstock availability – if you can only run 8 hours a day, oversizing the mill wastes capital. If you plan to run 24/7, invest in a robust gearbox and automatic lubrication.

What moisture level does my raw material need for bedding pellets?
It varies by material – and getting this wrong is the 1 reason pellets fall apart.
For wood, aim for 13–18% moisture. Too dry? The pellets won’t bind. Too wet? They’ll expand and crack. Straw and grass need 12–15% – but grass is trickier because it absorbs moisture unevenly. Paper can tolerate slightly higher, up to 15%, but anything above that and you’ll see die blockage. For fermented bedding (probiotic‑laced mixes), keep it around 14–16% – the sticky nature demands tighter control. Peat? Low compression ratio (1:4–1:6) means moisture matters less, but we still recommend 12–14%.

The catch? Paper needs more careful moisture control – too wet and it clogs; too dry and it won’t bind. We use stainless steel feeders and polished dies to reduce friction. Also, paper pellets are lighter than wood, so shipping cost per ton is higher – factor that into your business model. But if you’re near a paper waste source? The margins are solid.

Yes, the same mill can produce both – but the pellet specs differ.

Our recommendation? If you’re running a commercial feedlot, wood is worth the premium – it reduces bedding changes and labor. What’s the difference between peat, fermented, and tofu bedding pellets – and which animal bedding machine do I need?
